Music purchases. Which formats?

Postby WitchdoctorGaz » Wed Jan 05, 2011 10:33 pm

Having recently purchased the excellent Grinderman 'Special Edition' second album, I muttered to myself (actually quite loudly - I like the sound of my own voice)
my appreciation of the package: 180gm of glorious Cave & Co and the album on CD as well.
Superb, it saves me the trouble of ripping the vinyl I thought to myself.
So how would you like to receive your music - CD, vinyl, download or combinations of all three?
Also, how much would you be prepared to pay for the same album as a 2 or 3 format purchase. Post your replies with your estimated % extra over the standard CD/Vinyl price (if you feel it should cost more, that is).

Vinyl and download but make it at least a CD quality DL (high res is better) and include a nice gatefold sleeve on the record please.

If I'm paying a premium for the vinyl over a CD, then I reckon the DL should be thrown in for free. If it's a high res DL, feel free to add 25% - then again, I am Captain Cheap.

Most free downloads I've come across are in lossy formats, so I much prefer the ones that rarely come with the CD (Rodrigo Y Gabriella, ColdPlay Viva, offhand can't think of any others actually!).

I prefer to get the vinyl versions, and only buy the CD if its unavailable on vinyl.

CDs are really cheap to produce, so I'm happy to pay $5-$10 extra if its included with the vinyl. Oh...we already pay $5-$10 extra for the vinyl version

Definitely prefer to purchase vinyl with a free digital download (FLAC). Reality unfortunately is buying cd's and ripping them due partly to the cost of vinyl, partly actually finding it - no vinyl sales in the 'Tron (that I'm aware of). Add to that a touch of domestic situation makes actually using vinyl more awkward than digital.

the biggest issue i have with down loads is you still dont have something in your hand afterwards
i have done a few hi res downloads, have a fairly good system and still dont think they are as musical as cd or vinyl
maybe its all in my mind

What puts me off downloads (apart from using up too much Broadband) is the fact that it seems you can never be absolutely sure you're getting the right master.
So many albums have been remastered three or four times, so how do you know you're downloading the best version? The best, in fact, may not be the latest.
It's also a matter of formatting on iTunes (or whatever).
I don't so much care about the "ownership" issue anymore - the best stuff, MUSIC, exists in space after all (well, not in space but in the air, you get my drift).
My issue is just around identification of the tracks, and how to put them in a library/format that makes detailed identification easy.

I prefer to buy vinyl however it's a balancing act as I also like CD's due to the convenience factor when cranking up the BBQ and floating in and out of the house while listening to feelgood sounds.
Downloads bother me because if I aint got it in my hands I aint really got it.

That's a major factor to keep in mind when dealing with downloads but the same applies to your important documents and digital images...it's all just waiting for your hard drive to go bye-bye. I take the approach of backing everything up like a paranoid cyber-criminal. if it isn't on at least three drives, it isn't anywhere.

Definitely Vinyl/CD for me at this stage, I thought about including hi-res downloads as an option on the poll but they really are in their infancy so I didn't put it in.
Of course I buy the odd album from HDTracks though. Anyone got the Steely Dan Gaucho 24/96 download from there yet?

Haven't bought a CD for just over 6 months. Counting all my music purchases in the last 6 months I counted 34 records  I need to ramp up the purchases to be honest. Funning really that in 2011 I feel I've gone forward by going backward! I have no regrets. Unfortunately I can't hold a download and I like to have something to hold (and I don't mean a 12" black dildo :o )
