Bad movie day

Hello Kino freaks, I've just had quite possibly the worst 96 minutes of my life. Well probably not, but I thought I'd treat myself to a bad movie this morning. Why the hell not!
King Kong Escapes is a 1968 production by Toho, the Japanese company responsible for such epics as Godzilla, Godzilla vs Mothra, King Kong vs Godzilla etc.
A ludicrous story highlighted by simply laughable special effects, this is what Amazon had to say about it (couldn't be bothered making up my own story):

It's King Kong to the rescue when a giant robot threatens to destroy Tokyo in the gripping King Kong Escapes! The action begins when the conniving Dr. Who builds a robot Kong in order to retrieve a highly radioactive element for his mysterious benefactor, Madame X. When the robot proves less than reliable, the devious duo scheme to kidnap the real Kong from his remote island home of Mondo. But interfering with their plans are the heroic trio of U.S. Cmdr. Carl Nelson, Lt. Jiro Nomura, and Kong's current crush, Lt. Susan Miller. It's up to them to outwit the greedy ape-nappers in this sci-fi adventure that takes Kong to unprecedented heights of excitement.

Yes it was complete crap, but the highlight for me was the exceptionally cute little Japanese hottie (Madame X - should be Madame Sex imho) who finally changes over to the side of pure goodness (the big KK and his minions) before being shot by the evil Japanese Dr Who (no, not that one).
And as always, Tokyo gets its ass kicked yet again in this silly romp.

I give it 4 out of 5 dingleberries on my silly movie scale :D

Bad movie day - Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus

Postby WitchdoctorGaz » Tue Jan 18, 2011 4:49 pm

Well well, Sunday came along and we had a bit of a lazy morning. Perfect conditions for a bad movie!

With a title like Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus I wasn't expecting much, especially as the acting duties were mainly courtesy of forgotten child pop-star Debbie Gibson (remember this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O92QcjT6vDY ) and Lorenzo Lamas of Falcons Crest fame.
Yep I wasn't expecting much! Here's a bit of the plot from Wikipedia:

Off the coast of Alaska, oceanographer Emma MacNeil (Deborah Gibson) is studying the migration patterns of whales aboard an experimental submarine she took without permission from her employer. Meanwhile, a military helicopter drops experimental sonar transmitters into the water, causing a pod of whales to go out of control and start ramming a nearby glacier. In the chaos, the helicopter crashes into the glacier, and the combined damage breaks the glacier open, thawing two hibernating, prehistoric creatures. MacNeil narrowly avoids destruction as, unknown to her, a giant shark and octopus are freed. Some time later, a drilling platform off the coast of Japan is attacked by the octopus, which has tentacles large enough to wrap around the entire structure. After returning to Point Dume, California, MacNeil investigates the corpse of a beached whale covered with bloody wounds. Her employer (Mark Hengst) believes them to be from a tanker propeller, but MacNeil insists they appear to be from a creature. Later, she extracts what appears to be a shark’s tooth from one of the wounds. Elsewhere, the huge shark leaps tens of thousands of feet into the air from the ocean and attacks a commercial aircraft, forcing it to crash into the water.

Yes that's right, a Mega Shark has leapt 30000 feet into the stratosphere to chomp down on a passing Boeing 747 cruising at 900kmh. It happens...click the link.

Peter Whittle of the UK's Sunday Times had this to say "How this ever got released is a mystery. Unwatchable, almost unreviewable, this stupid monster movie makes the Bela Lugosi swan song Plan 9 from Outer Space look like a masterpiece."
Did I enjoy it? Hell yes! Aside from the lousy plot and non-existent acting skills, the special effects are almost as good as I could do in the safety of my own bathtub. I might have to change the movie title though...

So I give Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus 3 dingleberries out of 5 on my silly movie scale, by all means watch it but don't say I didn't warn you.

Yeah you do, I don't really hold it against you though...too much electronica leads to dementia, so you don't know what you're saying :D
