Top 5 movies of all time and briefly why:

In no particular order:

Ghost in the shell. cant really go past one of the greatest anime movies of all time. Brilliant animation in a time before CG. An awesome score, and a mind bending plot and subtext.

Pulp fiction. Another classic. Film Noir for the sake of it. A genre spawning movie. And of course Tarantino is the master of dialogue.

THX 1138. Lucas before the neck roll over took his brain and he began to look like a money grubbing twi lek. One of the best dystopian features ever.

Metropolis. Fritz Langs 1927 masterpiece. A dystopian classic rife with uncorrupted Marxist philosophy. if such a thing exists.

Princess Mononoke. James Cameron wishes that avatar was this awesome.....

Jubjub! Jock! Jimjim! Jungle Jim! Jimmy Rim-Job! Jamiroquai! James! Welcome!!

Hmmmm tough question. I have seen so many films, old and new and I draw a blank. Off the top of my head though....

Withnail and I - how can you not like a film with such a classic line as "Stand aside you f*cker! I'm going to do the washing up!" (pretty sure that's how it goes!)
Children Of Men - those one-take action scenes still amaze me.
The Big Lebowski - the hero is a passive pot-smoking Dude in possibly the Cohen Brother's finest comedy. No Country For Old Men has to be in the top 10, surely.
I can't decide on my favorite anime. Should I be obvious and say Spirited Away or Akira? Or go Howl's Moving Castle or Laputa - Castle In The Sky or Paprika? Or should I agree with my bruvvuh and go Princess Mononoke or Ghost In The Shell? I quite liked Appleseed......
Brazil - directed by the great Terry Gilliam. One of the best dystopian features ever. ( :D )

Coming up with this list is vexing me because it's too damn tough to pick only five.

From my list of the movies I'll take with me when I drop off the radar, even though I've seen them many times before:

Fight Club - I ignored this movie for years despite glowing recommendations because I just knew it would be average at best. After all...Brad Pitt? Please. Was I ever wrong? Love this movie. If anyone needs a Tyler Durden alter ego, I do.

Blade Runner - As someone who's always been into sci-fi and has a major weakness for crime writing/movies, Blade Runner did it for me from the first few minutes. The story, the visuals and Sean Young? Also Rutger Hauer's performance in the final scene, what more could you want?

Oh Brother Where Art Thou?
- I can watch this once a month in perpetuity and enjoy it every time. Perfect performances all round woven into a storyline that just has to make you smile. Has Clooney ever been better? (That's a rhetorical question).

Pulp Fiction - Nothing more need be said.

Kill Bill 1 & 2 - Such a classy flick. Gotta love the old school revenge fantasy, not to mention the action scenes, most notably the epic Japanese fight featuring little GoGo Yubari (Chiaki Kuriyama)...be still my beating heart.

Snatch - Yeah I know. More Brad Pitt? Too bad. The best thing Guy Ritchie ever did IMHO and one of the slickest Brit gangster movies and I do love my Brit gangster movies.

(That's six not five - told you I couldn't choose)

its a tough call to make a top 5...... mine changes all the time so itd probably be different if i was to do it again now.

Brad Pitt is Hugely under rated as an actor, he has done some rubbish but he has also done some brilliant movies, Fight club, 12 monkies, snatch, seven to name a few. sure he's a ponce but hes done some great movies.

I have to add one movie to my list as above - No Country For Old Men.

One of the best movies I've ever seen. No doubt about it. I've sat through it three or four times now and every time it leaves me stunned. A truly scary movie in an old testament kind of way but brilliant.

You're so right, Ashley. That film literally had my heart racing throughout. Those Cohens are clever boys!

Another Cormac McCarthy book that was turned into a really good movie was The Road. Both that and No Country For Old Men are real horror movies, not nonsense about some mug with a hockey mask and a pig sticker.
