3G’s Network Shutdown – Here’s What That Means for Your Tech

May 12, 2025

Heads-up, Aotearoa: the 3G mobile network is on borrowed time, with Spark flicking the off switch in March 2026. Most Kiwis are already riding the 4G or 5G wave, but if you’re still clinging to an older device – think iPhone 5S, Galaxy J2 Pro, or a trusty old Nokia – it’s time for an upgrade.

It’s not just phones either. Tablets, alarms, vehicle trackers and other gizmos still on 3G will be left in the digital dust. Quick check: text ‘3G’ to 550 for free to see if your gear’s affected.

If you do need a new device, don’t chuck the old one in a drawer or the bin. RE:MOBILE (remobile.org.nz) will recycle it the right way – good for the planet, and your conscience.

The future’s faster, but only if you’re ready for it.

Why are 3G networks shutting down?

The NZ Telecommunications Forum (TCF) said shutting down 3G networks in the country would free up more space for improvements to 4G and 5G networks.

This could mean faster internet speed, improved call quality and faster video streaming, TCF said on its website.

“While it has been a reliable technology, closing these networks will free up radio spectrum that will be used to increase the availability of more capable 4G and 5G services, especially in rural areas.”

Retailers on notice: Don’t sell 3G duds

The clock’s ticking on 3G, and the Telecommunications Forum (TCF) has a word for retailers: stop flogging tech that’s about to be obsolete. With all major networks pulling the plug on 3G by year’s end, any device that leans on it – phones, alarms, trackers, you name it – could soon be as useful as a chocolate teapot.

TCF boss Paul Brislen says sellers must be upfront. Devices need to work beyond next year, and punters have the right to know what they’re buying. The kicker? Some gadgets sold as 4G or 5G still sneakily use 3G for voice calls. Dodgy.

There’s also a warning about offshore sellers dumping unwanted 3G gear in NZ. If it looks too cheap to be true, it probably is.

So before you buy, ask: will this still work in 2026? And if you’re selling? Sort your stock now – no excuses.

3G Consumer rights

If you’ve bought something in the last few years that will stop working after 3G is shut down, you can ask the retailer to put it right under the Consumer Guarantees Act.

Spark network announcement about 3G switch-off

Spark announced it would close off its 3G network on 31 March, 2026 and was upgrading 3G-only cell towers to 4G and 5G technology.

While affected customers would be receiving direct communication from Spark, it issued a list of common devices likely to be affected.

  • iPhone 6
  • Huawei Y5
  • HMD Global Nokia 3310
  • Mobiwire SAS Pocket 2
  • Oppo A5 (AX5)
  • Samsung Galaxy J2 Pro
  • iPhone 5S
  • Alcatel 1B
